The MeenMoves dance company started in 2007 under the direction of Sameena Mitta. Company members are an integral part of the creative process and include unique and captivating performers from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. The company’s education/outreach project, MadHops, has received numerous funding grants and has had projects in Kenya, India, Japan, NY, and in its long-term hub in Toronto, Canada. MeenMoves focuses on individuality, vulnerability, and strength while making way for others to be heard. In its ten years of existence, MeenMoves has presented dance-theatre works throughout Canada, Japan, India, Kenya and New York. Esteemed festivals from Ottawa to NYC have selected and produced numerous MeenMoves pieces, including the evening-length workalternative f(Acts) (2017), REturn (2007), and Growing Pains, co-presented by ODD in Ottawa (2013). They have performed works in the Frigid Festival (NYC, 2014), Westfest Dance Festival (NYC, 2015), 60×60 (NYC, 2015) and BAX’s Winter Festival (NYC, 2016). Recently, they have shown works at Dance On The Lawn, nimbusPRESENTS: during APAP2018 and at BAM Fisher. In 2015, MeenMoves was invited to create work through a residency at the Lake Studios in Berlin, and has produced work for the Choreographer’s Collective in NYC. Over the years, the core artists of MeenMoves have included dancers, musicians, costume designers, videographers and other performance artists of the highest caliber, including Kathryn Alter, Courtney Lopes,Connie Shiau, Stephanie Terasaki, Tyler Schnese, Wilson Anderson, Momenta String Quartet, SlowPitch, Sarah Timberlake, Amy Blumberg, and Alicja Hoppel.
