Sameena Mitta is artistic director of dance-theatre company MeenMoves and its outreach program MadHops. A graduate of The School of Dance in Ottawa (Celia Franca Scholarship), her career includes performances with White Oak Dance Project, Dagmar Spain/Dance Imprints, Kathryn Alter and Dancers, The Juilliard Opera Company, Drastic Action, Vanessa Walters (with Amy Sedaris), and Luis Tentindo. Mitta has presented choreography in Canada, Japan, India, Kenya, Germany, and across NJ and NYC. MeenMoves’ collaborations include ongoing site-specific dance film project Struwwelpeter filmed in Germany by Alicja Hoppel, Fe with composer Stephanie Griffin (premiering 2021), the evening-length alternative (f)Acts with live-scoring by Momenta Quartet and video by Hoppel (Martha Graham Theater), and Growing Pains with Toronto-based turntablist SlowPitch. MeenMoves has recently performed through STUFFED (Judson Memorial Church), NimbusPRESENTS: Offline+ at Bam Fisher and APAP 2020 & 2018 (Ailey Studios), NJPAC / Jersey New Moves Festival, and the Choreographers’ Collective (LaGuardia Performing Arts Center). Mitta earned with distinction the Cecchetti Society’s Associate Diploma and an MA in Dance Creation from UQAM focusing on Movement Intervention for South Asian survivors of domestic violence. An NJPAC Choreography Fellow (2018-2021), Mitta is also on faculty at the Limón Institute, Ballet Tech, and 92Y Harkness Dance Center.
